morel mushroom
Finding “free things” in the woods has always been a favorite pastime of mine. When our kids were younger we searched the woods near our cabin in the Swan Valley of Montana for all kinds of treasures. We collected deer and elk antlers, hunted for morel mushrooms, transplanted native plants, dug up rotting trees for mulch and searched for huckleberries.
These hand-woven items represent the progression of this hunting and gathering activity. The backbone of these weavings, wild dogwood and Rocky Mountain Maple, are gathered in the forests of northwest Montana. All materials used are hand woven and dyed and each weaving is unique.
I love the entire process from dying the reed, imagining a new form and design, then weaving the reed.
I hope you enjoy them.
